Verified Purchase. This is for Adobe CS3, the older programming which still has a useful link function the more modern CS programs don’t have.

The value for me with this book is that it provides more detailed information about the specific CS3 function, and it is possibly of use with other CS programs that are updates of the CS3. It allows a user to work with their program and learn more with the book.

The trouble with this book is it’s only for one aspect of the CS3 which means other information is needed for learning and using the programs better, there are the other Adobe CS manuals also. The value for users is better with self teaching than just using the programs freehand.

While that’s still an option, often the details and alternatives which are shared in the manuals can assist in progressing uses faster.

Since my first experience with the Classroom in a Book series had been so positive, I picked up their Illustrator book.

When I started the Photoshop book, I already had some self-taught knowledge of the program. When I started the Illustrator book, I had never used the program, other than to complete a couple of lessons in the previous book that integrated Photoshop and Illustrator files. And, I’ll admit that my skills in drawing with a mouse are poor at best. However, I hoped to walk away from the Illustrator book with a higher level of comfort with the tool and be able to utilize it for some of my design tasks.

This book helped me only partially meet my goals. Like the other books in the Classroom series, the Illustrator book was separated into step-by-step lessons for beginning users. However, in contrast with my previous experiences, this book felt less cohesive and at times poorly written. While most of the lessons in the Photoshop book centered around completing one specific project designed to teach a particular set of tools, the Illustrator book tended to jump around, having the user complete bits and pieces of several projects.

I didn’t get the satisfaction of looking at one completely finished piece that I could compare with the illustrations in the book. Some of the lessons were too long based on the concept being taught. For example, an entire lesson on how to use the Zoom tool seemed extraneous. Other lessons seemed to skim over more complex concepts that I felt would have benefited my foundational knowledge of the program. In addition, the instructional writing was poor in this book. I found myself reading some passages several times to determine what I was actually supposed to do.

I suppose, this could partially be blamed on my lack of familiarity with the program, but if the book is marketed for beginning users, the language the authors use to describe a task should be clear and easy to follow. Overall, I was disappointed with the quality of this particular title in the Classroom in a Book series, and I seriously question whether I’ll look to this series when I get ready to pursue Flash training.

I have basic competency using the available tools in the program. However, the level of instruction the book provided hasn’t given me confidence that there will be lasting knowledge transfer to design tasks on the job. I know this is a pretty old book for old adobe software but. I was looking to get back into graphic design without breaking the bank.

I lucked out and picked cs3 standard for 20 on a certain auction site. It has been a while since I used illustrator but this book got me up and running hopefully one day I will have enough money to afford the cloud adobe cs but until then this will do.

I recommend classroom in a book it is clear albeit a little disorganized as you do an assignment then learn the work space which I think is backwards. But it is a good book for old software. Great way to get into the computer graphics and illustration is either older software the cheaper but just as core suite but not as recognized in the industry or last inkscape n gimp.

One person found this helpful. Being brand new to Illustrator, I felt that I needed to get this book to show me how to thoroughly use the program. I had already done a bunch of tutorials I found on the internet, but wanted to really be able to dig deep into Illustrator, so I turned to the Adobe book for this.

The problem I found was that it did a great job of detailing everything that I already knew how to do, but halfway through the book started flying through the things I didn’t. Also, I felt its biggest downfall was when it started just saying “click this”, “choose this”, “enter this”, etc.

Anyone can follow a click here, enter this, tutorial and come out with the results, but understanding the “why” behind it is truly learning and being able to apply the lesson later on. Overall it was decent because I at least got to know the layout of the program well, but you’re probably better off just finding tutorials on the internet for each specific purpose if you can. I got this book for a class in college. As I began to use it I was disappointed, instead of directly teaching the concepts of Illustrator and how to use its features, this book takes the reader through examples.

I found this to be a doable, but ineffective way of learning because it showed me how to do specific things without explaining how those specific things fit into the bigger picture of Illustrator as a whole. So not a complete waste of money, but I would say there are definitely better ways to learn the program check out [ At the time this was the only available book for Illustrator CS3, so there wasn’t much choice.

It gives a decent overview of the program and is fairly typical of Adobe’s Classroom in a Book series. Nothing to jump up and down about though. The lessons are easy to follow, even for beginners.

More thorough and in-depth books are apparently due out soon and should satisfy those wanting more details on actually how to get the most out of this latest Illustrator. The Classroom in a Book series is usually well done, and this entry is no exception. The lessons are easy to follow and give you several options for various tasks; just enough to make you hungry for more information.

Unfortunately, like most books in the series, its aimed at beginners, so you aren’t going to get too deep into the program. Still, its very good for a refresher or to learn some of the new stuff, and it serves its purpose well.

See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Report abuse. Very Good. Good learning material, useful book. I bought this book about a months ago and have just finished going through it a few days ago. So is it worth it? I am proficient in photoshop and know indesign to an extent, so certain tools, such as pen, brush, mask etc were easy to get to grips with.

If u’ve used illustrator before, then i wouldn’t recommend this book, it does go through new features such as live color etc, but i think u can easily read up about that on the net.

I’m much more familiar with the tools and its quite a genius program once u get ur hear around it. My advice would be to get this book if ur a complete newby, even if ur a photoshop genius like me, the integration is amazing Other than that, the tutorials are fun, the files on the CD are great, has some good sections on color management and exporting

This was a good book to learn Illustrator CS5 on. I had to use it for a Web Design class and knew absolutely nothing about illustrator. It was very helpful because it provided to opportunities to learn how to use the tools that Illustrator provides and gives you projects to practice on. I highly recommend using this book if you want to learn Illustrator. I switched from Photoshop to Illustrator and the world opened up mainly due to this book.

The examples are comical, but the techniques being illustrated are everything I could have hoped for from a pro-level class. Buy it if you are entering into the program. Now I want an advanced book for serious illustration. The books is really informative and necessary to learn Illustrator but also it is aggravatingly condescending.

I spend half the lesson undoing the previous step because the author wanted to reiterate what was already taught in previous lessons.

This is a college level book and should treat the readers as such. They are modern and new. It is a big help to The books is really informative and necessary to learn Illustrator but also it is aggravatingly condescending. It is a big help to keep me interested. Straight from the source, no better tutorial out there.

As much as I am fond of Adobe products, I am not a fan of their Classroom in a book series. This one ranks just as OK. I am currently teaching a course in Illustrator and am using the book as a basis for lectures to lesson plans.

Like so many training books, this one over-explains topics which, in my opinion are more confusing and do not have a lot of real world applications.

A great primer on the use of Adobe Illustrator. I found it helpful to go through the whole book, even if you are knowledgeable on the information in some chapters, if only for the sake of seeing how Adobe uses their products key commands, steps, thought processes. This is NOT a book about design. This book teaches you how to use Adobe Illustrator. I am planning on taking the certification tests that Adobe offers for Adobe Illustrator.

They recommend reading this book as preparation. We will se A great primer on the use of Adobe Illustrator. We will see how helpful it was once I take the tests.

View 1 comment. I felt this book is not suitable and confusing for beginners. I’ve learned most of the skills and features from other tutorials on other websites. This book provides the descriptions of the features and functionalities. Despite there are lessons for different skills in every chapter, I felt difficult to master the skill being taught from this book whereas I’ve learned from more online tutorials.

However, all the illustrations in this book are very beautiful. Big book of tutorials showcasing AI CS4’s full toolbox. Fantastic study book for beginners or anyone who needs a week of warm up exercises and reminders. Lots of little stuff in here I never knew about from learning AI on my own. Would be a 5 star if they had made it less sterile and void of personality.

Mar 19, Nick rated it liked it Recommends it for: vectors, not pixels. You can’t just pick this one up at a bar and take her home for a one night fling like the Quickstart Guides, but Adobe’s Classroom In A Book for CS3 rewards you if you have patience, caring, and strong, confident hands.

Oct 14, Tara added it. Illustrator is the best. The book is helpful for those unusual things that crop up. It is also good for the basics. No book can teach everything that there is to know about this amazing program or its counterparts in the adobe suite.

This book goes over pretty much anything you can do with Illustrator CS5, and help you familiarize yourself with its tools. You also get little exercises to practice.

It’s a good way to learn if you’re on your own and need to tame this program. I’ve set this one aside as I’ve decided to concentrate my limited free time on mastering Photoshop.

Although this book and CD package is loaded with great hands-on tutorials, I’ll probably use it more as a reference book when I need to work with vector art.

Shelves: educational-non-fiction. At the time of this book purchase, I enjoyed working through it. It’s one of those books that I like to keep on my shelf.

Most of this sort of information is available on the internet now.
