Microsoft word 2016 only have header on first page free

I read quite a few posts on how to have header and footer only on the first page in a word document. I tried to apply this method to a dotx file template but when using the template the next pages get the header and footer.

A variety of line styles and widths and art borders are available from the Design menu on the Ribbon. Content of the header or footer on the first page is removed. The header is a section of the document that appears in the top margin , while the footer is a section of the document that appears in the bottom margin.
